Kasimir Zgorecki

When Kasimir Zgorecki first arrived in the Pas-de-Calais as a polish immigrant he was a coal mineur. Soon after, in 1924, he became an artisan-photographer. His most interesting production lasted till World War II. In relationship to other works of that kind, he had several originalities. First it is a testimony from inside an important community of immigrants. Photos that you keep or send back home to show social ascension.
The facades and the interiors of stores have that function. The photos of post-mortem children allow you to keep a trace of the lost one, but also to let the family know back home in Poland. The self-portraits show the fantasy of the immigrant: have a social status but also the irony in the work of Kasimir Zgorecki in relation to life and photography. It is probably these 2 caracteristics that make the other portraits that he has made so moving.
